Understanding Zakat

What is the Hawl (One Year Period)?

Hawl refers to one complete lunar year (approximately 354 days). Zakat becomes due on wealth that you have possessed for one complete Hawl. The year starts from when you first acquired the Nisab threshold.

Who is Eligible to Receive Zakat?

According to the Quran (9:60), Zakat can be given to eight categories: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect Zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, to free captives, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and travelers in need.

When Should I Pay Zakat?

Zakat is due immediately once your wealth has been above the Nisab for one lunar year. Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan for the increased reward, but it can be paid anytime after it becomes due.

Items Exempt from Zakat

Personal items for daily use (home, car, clothing, furniture), tools of trade (professional equipment), and property used for personal residence are generally exempt from Zakat. Only wealth kept for investment or growth is zakatable.
